I had the same problem because I was logged into the computer under a user account, not an administrator account. I logged into the machine as under an account with administrator privileges and the install was successful. However, once I went back to the non-admin account, it tells me I need to install the program again. And it fails; it does not prompt for admin credentials during the install, it just says installation failed. So I can watch directv content in the browser, but only if I'm logged into the machine under the admin account where I installed the player.
